December 2015. Pepe had gone mainstream — talk shows, t-shirts, your aunt's timeline. Deep in a Pepe trading thread on /r9k/, an anon opened MS Paint, filled a shape with pure yellow and typed one line: “Pepe is dead. I'm replacing him with Yarl.”

Nine more drawings followed. A cousin named Garl. A third one named Marl. Then the thread slid off the board and Yarl went quiet — no sad version, no smug version, no rares. He never needed them.

Ten years later the frog has a ticker. So does the thing that came to replace him.

02 The succession

The Pepe killer.

Every era gets the frog it deserves. This one gets something yellow, damp and unbothered.
